Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (1)

We have many rave reviews from so many readers about how this is the best air fryer recipe and baked potato recipe they’ve ever made.

Our air fryer baked potatoes are a well-loved recipe, one of our favorite ways to use our air fryer and make baked potatoes.

No one can resist the crispy seasoned potato skin outside and the fluffy and delicious interior. Together it’s so perfect you don’t even need to use toppings!

When you put on the seasonings, it just takes the potatoes to another level because it’s cooking it at high heat with air circulating the entire potato, air frying it!

Ingredient notes

  • Idaho or Russet Baking Potatoes – Russet and Idaho potatoes are the best for making baked potatoes. The skin gets crispy, and the interior gets fluffy. A red potato or Yukon potato isn’t ideal for baking, more so roasting.
  • Avocado Oil – This is our preferred high-heat oil since it has a high smoke point.
  • Salt – We use regular or kosher salt; you can do it to taste.
  • Granulated Garlic – We prefer granulated over powdered. It has more flavor, and it’s more coarse.
  • Parsley – We use dried parsley for garlic, and we think it adds a bit of flavor too!

How to make air fryer baked potatoes

Wash the potatoes and then pierce the potatoes with a fork a few times to create holes for steam to escape.

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (2)

Drizzle avocado oil onto the potatoes on a plate with the seasonings. Rub the seasonings and oil all over the potatoes.

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (3)

Once the potatoes are evenly coated, place them into the air fryer basket.

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (4)

Air fry the potatoes at 390 degrees F for 35-40 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender. How long to cook baked potatoes in the air fryer will depend on how big your potatoes are. 35-40 minutes is for a medium-sized potato.

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (5)

Top with your favorite toppings like a pat of butter or a dollop of sour cream.

Recipe tips and variations

  • To cut the cooking time in half, you can use smaller potatoes or even slice the potatoes in half lengthwise.
  • You can use this potato seasoning on cubed potatoes as well. It’s so good!
  • A bigger potato will require more time. We prefer using small or medium potatoes for baking in the air fryer.
  • Our kiddos love these potatoes with ketchup, and it’s pretty darn good. 🙂

Storage and reheating tips

  • Refrigerate: Store any leftover baked potatoes in a container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • Reheat: To reheat we just air fry the potato at 375 degrees F for 6-10 minutes.

How to serve

Once they come out of the air fryer, you can slit the potato, pinch, and push both sides to open it. We like to top our potato with a dollop of sour cream or a pat of butter.

Baked potatoes are great with a lean protein like oven baked chicken or air fryer pork chops. Want something a little more fancy? Try our air fryer bacon wrapped filet mignon.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you cook air fryer baked potatoes?

A small medium baked potato in the air fryer at 390 degrees F should cook for a total of 35-40 minutes. The bigger your potatoes are the more time they will take to cook.

Why not just make a microwave baked potato?

You will not get crispy skin on a potato in the microwave. Microwaves result in more of a gluey potato, deplete nutrients, and won’t pack as much flavor as an air fryer baked potato.

Do you have to pierce a potato before baking it in an air fryer?

I would say no, but I’ve actually had a batch of potatoes have one burst open. Creating small holes “piercing with a fork” helps the air escape.

Can you bake whole sweet potatoes in the air fryer?

Yes! Sweet potatoes come out delicious in the air fryer as well. See our air fryer baked sweet potatoes recipe.

Notes

The nutrition is always estimated and with this recipe, it counts the full amount used. That means when you get salt on your hands, salt in the bowl and seasoning drops into the air fryer basket, it is still counted towards the nutrition label even though it’s not in the recipe. If salt intake is a concern we suggest using it at the end to season with your desired/allowed amount.

I have been going back and forth on whether to get an air fryer or not. We have a deep fryer but we rarely use it – it just sits on the counter and smells up the house when we do. That said, these potatoes might have swayed me in the “I want one right now” direction…

    Madi

    Reply

    • Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (54)Courtney Lopez

Hi Madi! Glad you enjoyed 🙂 I’ve updated the nutrition label with a note to follow up on your concerns about the salt. As you know from making the recipe the seasonings will get all over your hands, the bowl, and even some ends up in the bottom of the air fryer. 😮 Unfortunately, the recipe card counts the total amount used, but we really don’t use all of that salt. If salt is a concern you can always add salt at the end or the desired amount in the beginning.

  28. Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (55)Sharon

Just bought my first air fryer. Will a single potato take the same amount of time as two or three? Your recipe looks delicious! Thanks.

    Reply

    • Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (56)Courtney Lopez

One potato will cook in less time as there’s more air circulating around just one potato. Hope that helps and thank you! 🙂

  29. Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (57)Alycia Nichols

I just bought an air fryer a few days ago. I’ve not yet used it because I’m just deathly afraid to!!! I’m a “traditional cook” with many years in the kitchen, so trying new gadgets is tough for me. As I’m watching my 60-year-old waistline, though (what’s left of it, anyway!😉), I thought it might be wise to get on board with the air fryer everyone’s ravaging about. This baked potato seems like a good, safe kickoff recipe. If I screw it up, I’m only out the cost of a potato! Thanks for dragging my toe into the water!

    Reply

    • Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (58)Courtney Lopez

  30. Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (59)June

The air fryer is a healthy alternative to cooking in oil, but the sodium is over 2200. Why so high?
Is there a way to get the sodium lower?

    Reply

    • Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (60)Courtney Lopez

      Hi June!

I understand your concern. The nutrition label isn’t the exact amount in some dishes. Please also refer to the notes under the nutrition label to check for more info. 🙂

      “Recipe Notes:

If I wanted to wait 45 minutes for a Baked Potato, I would use the Oven. I’m going to trying microwaving it for a few minutes & then crisping it up in the Air Fryer.

    Reply

    • Air Fryer Baked Potatoes (64)Courtney Lopez

You can absolutely microwave it, but microwaves do deplete the nutrients. Our article mentions why we prefer using the air fryer over using the large oven. It heats up the whole house using a large oven and the potatoes are so much fluffier and crispy on the outside in the air fryer. Everyone loves our air fryer baked potato recipe and it’s definitely worth the wait. That being said, we hope you enjoy with the alternations 🙂

That’s exactly how I cook my potatoes but in the oven. I learned long ago that if u wrap your potatoes in foil u actually just steam them but coating them with oil and a good dose of salt actually ROASTS them! 😱 It opened my world wide! I just purchased an air fryer and I will have to try the potatoes in there now. Thanks for the idea!

It’s crispy on the outside compared to what you’d typically get from a foiled wrapped baked potato in the oven which is usually soggy and sometimes wet on the outside. 🙂

Really awesome recipe! Skin was crisp and the flavor was good. Only issue was mine took an hour and 10 minutes in the air fryer, but it was a big potato so makes sense. Yum!
