'Hot mess': Omaha pedestrians say Leavenworth/Saddle Creek construction leaves them stranded (2024)

Midtown drivers need a soldier’s grit to run the gauntlet at Saddle Creek Road and Leavenworth Street, now that reconstruction of the weird five-legged intersection is in full swing.

But the pedestrians who try it? Well, they deserve a medal.

Just ask Chris Kilroy, a midtown resident who works as a financial adviser in a small shop on the south side of Leavenworth near 52nd Street. A dedicated walker, he decided to hoof it down the street to get a burger at Bronco’s, on the north side of Leavenworth at 46th Street.

'Hot mess': Omaha pedestrians say Leavenworth/Saddle Creek construction leaves them stranded (1)

Turns out, you can’t get there. Every pedestrian crossing at the Saddle Creek/Leavenworth/48th Street crossroads was blocked byconstruction.

“I can’t see any way of getting across Leavenworth,” Kilroy said. “Before, all four entry points (to the intersection) had pedestrian lights. Now, there’s zero.”

“It’s a hot mess,” he added.

Eventually, the medium-term pain of the construction will yield some long-term gain when the project wraps up in December: additional left turn lanes at the intersection on both roads, and a new traffic signal and crosswalks. One day, there will even be a bike and pedestrian trail crossing Saddle Creek at Emile Street.

But none of that was helping Kilroy get his Bronco Burger.

Irate, he vented at the construction workers— unjustly, he acknowledges.

“It’s not their fault,” he said.

Still stranded on the sidewalk, Kilroy called the Mayor’s Hotline to find out what to do. Or, to be honest, just to vent some more.

“You should consider another route,” he was told.

He puzzled that one out. The only route he could come up with was to backtrack to 50th Street, head north around Holy Sepulchre Cemetery to Farnam Street, and south across the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus. At least a mile in each direction.

Kilroy gave up his burger, but he did write a post on the Dundee-Memorial Park Neighborhood Association’s Facebook page (temporarily renamed “Cinnamon Meadows” due to an April Fools' joke gone awry).

Turns out, lots of midtowners have run into trouble because of the construction. One person said he’d given up using his mobility scooter to get to medical appointments at the Nebraska Medical Center. Another said the wind had blown a “No Left Turn” sign into his brand-new car, inflicting $2,400 worth of damage.

“I live midtown and work downtown, and EVERY available route has construction going on— Farnam, Dodge, Leavenworth— which I don’t understand,” one resident mused. “You’d think they could coordinate it just a little better?”

The complaints inspired Kilroy to request a meeting with the city engineer and propose a solution: perhaps a temporary button-activated pedestrian signal could be added at the corner.

City engineer is one of the hats worn by Austin Rowser, who is Omaha’s deputy public works director.

And he has some good news.

Rowser told The World-Herald in an email that the crosswalk closure is only temporary, due to paving work on Saddle Creek and some utility cuts in the sidewalk.

“The pedestrian signals are currently bagged,” he said, “but the bags will be removed prior to re-opening the (pedestrian) access on Monday.”

Kilroy hopes the city will make it a practice to plan for pedestrians when they map out traffic projects.

"I walk everywhere," he said. "This particular part of Omaha likes walking."
