Apple Music has just shared the 100 best albums of all time and it's left people divided (2024)

Apple Music has revealed its ranking of the 'top 100 best albums' of 'all time' and it's left music lovers divided.

With music lovers each having their own unique taste, it was always going to be hard to create a top 100 albums of all time without ruffling a few feathers along the way and Apple Music's compilation has certainly caused a stir online.

Apple's release explains it's '100 Best Albums' list is 'a modern 21st-century ranking of the greatest records ever made'.

It says the list was 'crafted by Apple Music’s team of experts alongside a select group of artists, songwriters, producers, and industry professionals'.

It adds: "The list is an editorial statement, fully independent of any streaming numbers on Apple Music - a love letter to the records that have shaped the world music lovers live and listen in."

But which musicians and albums make it within the top 10?

10. Lemonade (2016) - Beyoncé

Well, in tenth spot is Beyoncé's sixth studio album which features bangers such as 'Sandcastles'.

9. Nevermind (1991) - Nirvana

Next up is 1991 release Nevermind by American rock band Nirvana, founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic.

8. Back to Black (2006) - Amy Winehouse

It certainly wouldn't be a top 10 list of the best albums in the world if Amy Winehouse wasn't on it somewhere, the late singer having just seen her story dramatised in 2024 musical drama - named after her most infamous album - Back to Black.

7. good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012) - Kendrick Lamar

Lamar's second studio album has earned him seventh place on Apple Music's top 100 albums of all time.

6. Songs in the Key of Life (1976) - Stevie Wonder

The musical pioneer that is Wonder - full name Stevland Hardaway Morris - has landed a spot on the list at number six.

5. Blonde (2016) - Frank Ocean

With two albums of his already having made it onto a top greatest albums of all time list - Rolling Stone's top 500 released in 2020 - it's not a surprise Ocean has made Apple Music's list too.

Ocean makes it into spot five with is 17-track release Blonde.

4. Purple Rain (1984) - Prince & The Revolution

The album was the first album of Prince's to reach number one on the Billboard 200 and remains iconic to this day.

3. Abbey Road (1969) - The Beatles

It certainly wouldn't be a list of the best albums of all time if The Beatles didn't make it in the top 10, coming in at position number three.

The English rock band - made up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - are regarded by many as the most influential band of all time.

2. Thriller (1982) - Michael Jackson

The 'King of Pop' makes it in at spot number two on Apple Music's list of the best albums of all time.

1. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) - Lauryn Hill

And Hill, regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, has been awarded spot number one.

Elsewhere on the top 100, artists such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Billie Eilish are mentioned.

However, Apple Music's list has left people divided.

One X user said: "Beyoncé is the only female artist with TWO Albums in the Apple Music 100 Best Albums of All Time list….should have been AT LEAST three but we move."

"So Apple Music made a list of 100 best albums of all time and didn’t include any of Mariah Carey Whitney Houston and Brandy albums.." another added.

A third commented: "Apple Music not choosing even one Madonna album in the first ten of Best Albums Of All Time is outrageous."

While a fourth claimed it was 'so bad'.
